When a woman is pregnant, we give gifts to the baby & plan baby showers with all the focus being on the baby.
There is very little focus and acknowledgment to the woman and HER body, HER emotions, HER sacrifice, and HER life that she is changing to bring this baby into the world.
The Mother Blessing ceremony is an adaptation of an ancient Navajo ceremony called a Blessingway.*
Participants of a Blessingway honor, pamper, and prepare the pregnant mother for her journey through birth into motherhood.
Our modern culture showers a mom-to-be with items for her first baby at a Baby Shower with the focus being on the baby.
A Mother’s Blessing is a ceremonial celebration with the focus being on the pregnant mama and her transformation from maiden to mother.
*Out of respect, it is recommended to use another term, such as Mother’s blessing, if you are not of Native American descent.
A Binding Bracelet Circle is a wonderful way to symbolize to the pregnant mother at the event that she is supported & connected to the women in the circle.
One at a time starting with the mother, a ball of red yarn is wrapped around each guests wrist twice & then passed on to the woman next to her who does the same.
As the yarn is wrapped around each guests wrist, they can tell the group of women how they know the mother, give the mother words of affirmation, or share some insight into motherhood.
Each woman then takes a turn to cut the strings of the woman next to her & ties it to her wrist. The bracelets stays on until the mother births her baby.
The red yarn symbolizes the umbilical cord and its connection of mom and baby. By having the women closest to the mother participate in a Binding Bracelet Circle, they are symbolizing their connection to the mother and showing they will be there for love & support.
How is A Blessing Candle Ceremony done?
1. Each guest will choose a colored string to tie around a big candle for the mother.
2. The guests then take the same color of string and tie it around a candle for them to take home.
3. Once the mother goes into labor, they will be notified and encouraged to light their candle and say a special prayer or thought for the mother to show continuous support.
Why have a Blessing Candle Ceremony?
POSITIVITY: It sends the mother positive vibes that can uplift her during labor & delivery
CONNECTION: It strengthens the connection between the mother and the women closest to her
LOVE & SUPPORT: Pregnancy and postpartum is a time when women need the most love and support. Too often we feel alone. Although, most likely, the guests at a Mother’s Blessing won’t be present at the birth of the baby, they can show their love and support for the mother without being there. A Blessing Candle Ceremony focuses on that.
By having the women closest to the mother participate in a Blessing Candle ceremony, they are symbolizing their connection to the mother and showing they will be there for love & support.
Wishing Trees are a sweet sentiment to have for the mother at a Mother’s Blessing.
Each guest will write a wish for the new mother using decorative paper/cards. They then tie the wishes to the wish tree as “leaves.”
The wishes will later be collected after the event for the mother & can be cherished in a "Wish Book" or "Wish Box" or displayed at her birthing place or however she chooses.
This is a delightful way to help the mother feel beautiful & honored.
Each guest will be asked to bring a flower & will weave the flowers into a crown using additional foliage, florist wire, and florist tape for the mother.
Most commonly done at the beginning of the event so the mother can wear it during the event.
(I've actually had one client who wanted ALL her friends to have flower crowns so we wrote on the invitation "In lieu of gifts, please bring a bouquet of flowers" and then everyone made flower crowns together! I thought it was such a great idea. This is why I always communicate and talk with the pregnant mama to see what she is wanting in her Mother's Blessing and I tweak it in whatever way she will feel most pleased!)

"Ashley is extremely driven and passionate. She cares deeply about helping, educating, and empowering women and their families to make informed decisions about not only birth, but about all other aspects of overall health and wellness. She is not pushy about her own beliefs; rather, she's open to listen and is always happy to answer questions and educate others so that they can make their own informed decisions. You can't find a better, more knowledgable, passionate, support person or friend."

"Ashley planned a beautiful Mother's Blessing event for me in the summer of 2022. I loved how she thoughtfully prepared options for activities at the event that I could customize to my wishes. The evening of the event Ashley set everything up in such a beautiful careful way. I loved the decor that really set the tone and the gorgeous table with place settings for each guest. I enjoyed the outpouring of love all orchestrated by Ashley. I believe the women who love us want to show it, but sometimes do not know how until they are invited to do so in a certain way. I thought it was so tender to be loved in a way other than simple gift giving. Ashley's activities provided opportunities for supporting words and thoughtful keepsakes to feel poignantly of the support through the remainder of my pregnancy and even after birth. I would recommend a Mother's Blessing to any mama who wants to feel pampered, cherished, and lifted by loved ones."

"The Mother's Blessing gathering that Ashley facilitated for me was one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had. A few weeks beforehand we met together and discussed the details so that she knew exactly what I wanted. She put together the invitation, transported all the decor and food, and set things up at my home. Everything looked absolutely beautiful! I loved being surrounded by close friends, eating delicious food, celebrating labor and birth, and feeling immensely supported in my decision to have a home birth. Throughout the entirety of the experience I felt closely listened to, loved, and validated by Ashley. It was everything I could have hoped for and more! Ashley is a true example of the power that comes from a strong woman supporting other women in their journeys through motherhood; I couldn't recommend her more highly"
